I don't think I have heard of those jokes. But I have heard Poland dismissed as sending cavalry to fight German tanks and not really accomplishing anything. Poland's resistance during WW2 is dismissed as a big failure because of the cavalry vs tanks part. Or that is pretty much all that was mentioned about them in my history class. Which, as you said, is quite sad. To be outnumbered as much as these guys was and to resist until the bitter end. Such action is nothing short of courageous. I realize that every single battle cannot be taught in school but I would think this battle could be mentioned. Everyone (guys in my school anyways) was all impressed with the Spartans because they didn't back down. There is a lot more similar battles if only they were mentioned.
