Actuuuuuuuuuually, the deal was the creation of this Medievel pope who had a stake in the fish market. Since many Europeans avoided eating them, he came up with the Lenten sacrifice as a scheme to spur the buying of... Aquatic creatures such as turtles and even capybara were later added because the whole fake concept is just stupid and has nothing to do with anything Biblical.
Also, it is suppossed to be consumed on each Friday of Lent.

Your statement has no basis in reality and shows complete ignorance of the Catholic faith. Please stop spreading lies about the Church.

Nice try. Lenten sacrifice is discipline, not doctrine.

I dodged nothing. I told you the nature of the practice and you refused to listen. You obviously have no respect for God with how you pronounced his name. Remove the demon that is telling you to say such things and then, and only then, will I debate you.

I am the demon.

But if Y'eshua bar Yosephus is offended, let his Big Daddy smote me.

Debate is irrelevent. Quotes will do.

...my mother was heavy-duty Catholic, and we had to endure crappy fish every Friday. It was never fresh unless we got lucky with a catch in the summer, and the smell would permeate the whole house....it turned me off of seafood in general for YEARS.

I love seafood, but I remember those days. My neighborhood was about 60% Catholic when I was small, and it surprised me when, a neighbor girl had to decline our invite for supper because she was only allowed to eat fish on Friday. Fast forward to High School and I had a friend that had to ask about the spaghetti. He's Italian-American, Catholic, and a straight up guy. He didn't want ANY meat, not even the juices from the meatballs in his Spaghetti during Lent. I advised him, even without the meatballs, there was other meat juice in the spaghetti sauce. I knew because when I had to clean the kettle out at the end of shift, I also found several chicken necks put in there for flavor. (now you know what to do with those things)

:-) I finally relearned to like seafood when I had the best English beerbattered halibut EVER in a pub in Kamloops, BC years ago, and still enjoy it when I can :-) as for chicken necks ..... wellll......getting past the "ick" factor is the hard part, but they do make for a mighty fine broth.

Wow! Sounds like some stand up Christians who really feared the Lord. I wish I had that faith when I was younger. Or at the very least, some Catholic friends that abided by the restrictions so I could stay in line.

The first time I heard about fish on Friday, and IIRC, it was EVERY Friday, not just lent, JFK was still president. Tony, my friend, was the same age as me, so he hadn't shaken that early training.

Neat-o. Some countries still have that restriction. The US had that lifted for the opportunity for other forms of sacrifice. I'm suprised how some people mistake eating fish as a necessity when really the restriction is no meat with fish being permissible.

My joke is that I went to Catholic grammar school, high school, and college, therefore I'm an atheist.
Seems near everyone that I grew up with also got turned of in the process.

I wanted the jon the Baptist Church when I was 16, but ma said no, so I stopped going to church altogether.
