What Can It Be?

We need better security in schools.

I'm not opposed to there being security, especially in Big Schools. Many schools now have in the thousands. That said I don't believe in things like metal detectors, routine bag searches, and the like. Any security should be discrete.

The mindset of our children is important. They should not constantly be reminded they could be shot any moment nor that they are living in a police state.

Agreed.

One thought I had was rather than arming teachers is having armed security that gets paid more to teach some classes. In a 5 period high school teachers usually get 4 classes and 1 "conference" period (class off). Have them teach 2 classes, patrol two classes and still get their conference. Having a handful of those in the schools will keep the added security costs down and increase safety.

If kids are introduced to what armed guards look like in the kinder years then it wont be scary to have a suited up guy teaching your class. With proper introduction, Kinder kids will grow up thinking of the security more like super hero's than cops.

These security/teachers should in No Way be involved with the discipline of students. This will violate the trust between them and the students. There should be separate, less armored/armed security to deal with delinquents and the visual distinction should be extremely exaggerated so students know who's "cool" and who they're going to see when they screw up.

I don't believe in arming teachers at all. There are just there to strictly teach. I don't believed having any more security than is absolutely necessary. But at large schools in the thousands it may be appropriate to have up to two armed security personnel.

It needs to be noted that this will in no way shape or form stop the gun problem we're seeing in this nation. But it will curb on occasion the worst effects of some school shooters.
