Fireworks and gunshots can sound exactly the same. I've witnessed a murder and when I first heard the gunshots, I thought they were just fireworks.

There are some slight differences. A shotgun and any automatic rifle sounds different, but there are some major similarities between bolt actions and pistols and fireworks sound wise, which is why the untrained ear can't easily tell the difference.
OUT THERE IS A GUN RANGE... IF YOU GO THERE JUST ONCE IN YOUR LIFETIME, YOU'LL FINALLY KNOW THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A GUNSHOT, CAR BACKFIRE, FIREWORKS ETC...
