I love classical music, including opera, but know practically nothing about "popular" music from later than the 70's. Here is a classical one (Wagner, Flying Dutchman). There are English translation of the whole libretto in the Internet, so you can easily google the translation and the context (as I have to do all the time with many of the English allusions on this website).
