I think it's an interesting animal. Who will be the first imgflipper to have one meme that makes it to the top of Hot and also to the top of Viral (most likely at different times)?
You have to understand how reddit works for a lot of those to make sense. It's not just one front page like we have here. It's filled with groups called subreddits that are all geared towards certain people who like certain things.
Those memes going viral could be a result of being posted to a topic of discussion that has hundreds of thousands of people reading it. It also depends on the popularity if the person who posts it. You don't simply make an account and post to the top of a thread that is that popular. In fact new users will most likely have their memes rejected just for being new. You have to build up your "karma" over there by getting upvotes. So if you are a troll or whatever and have low or negative karma your posts most likely will be denied right off the bat.
Unlike here where the mods have hardly any presence at all. Over there rules are strictly enforced for each subreddit and getting messages telling you how you screwed up can be pretty regular.
Anyway hope that explains things a little. Our memes becoming more popular there would only be good for this site. Most of the memes there now come from imgur a site I can't stand so I wouldn't mind more flippers getting noticed. By no means should any imgflipper feel like their meme not going viral over there means it's not as good as those that do. It's just the next step of really getting your creations out there for those who wish to take it.
