A quick look at FBI statistics shows that the murder rates are the highest in the South where the people are also the most religious; several additional studies have confirmed this, although many disagree but they can're refute the hard facts. Another one of the reasons that there is more violence in areas that are more religious is that religions support the use of corporal punishment from an early age teaching escalating violence later in life. Utah might be the exception where Gordon Hinkley came out publicly against corporal punishment decades ago.
