When multiple assailants attack the best form of defense is a carbine. It has multiple points of contact with the body for stability and accuracy and enough magazine capacity to engage multiple targets without reloading. The low felt recoil of carbines, particularly the ar15, allows weaker defenders (women and children of certain age) to fire without flinching as much compared to a large caliber pistol.
When criminals are starting to wear body armor, pistols don't make the cut. I generally don't like 556 for home defense because of noise, flash, and over penetration. I prefer 300 blackout bc the subsonic rounds have similar performance of 45 acp while shooting flatter and can be suppressed.
