Our lovely Canadian government did a big push for those gawdawful CFC curly bulbs and made it harder to get traditional bulbs ... but those CFCs are dangerous to dispose of and worse for the environment due to their mercury content ... not to mention, I get monster headaches and eye strain from them. The LEDs are safer in some ways, but you have to be careful about which kind of aesthetic light coverings you use because on some of them, the base gets really, really hot.
In BC, hydro rates are artificially high, not to discourage use (we produce far more than we can use), but to support the big business-friendly policies of the last government. Hydro users took it up the wazoo so that businesses south of the border could pay next to nothing for the energy they take from us. If not for the un-availability of normal bulbs, we often find ourselves forced to switch to these electrical eyesores to try and save money .. and the amount saved is quickly eaten up by rate increases. The environment? Customer use is NOTHING compared to the uses by big business, and our efforts don't even make a dent in any of it.
