but chemists use 1,3-dimethylcycloheptan-1-ol, too, maybe because its easier to imagine (numbering of more complicated ring systems is hell!)

i know, right? i sent some structures to ChemAbstracts services for the correct names (at $10 each) and they all came back inconsistent with each other ) :
It is always amazing - the deeper you get into maths and science, the more you realize how inconsistent it often is! Humanity seems to be unable to create something really consistent.
