If you look at Trump's voter registration record, all but a few years he was registered as a Republican. That's decades of being a Republican.

1987-1999 Republican (12 years)
1999-2001 Independent (2 years)
2001-2009 Democrat (8 Years)
2009- Republican (8 Years)

Provably 2 decades of being a Republican, according to his voting records. 8 Years of being a Democrat is hardly "quite a while". Two decades I would call quite a while.
