We need both types, though, as frustrating as they can be. Take the Trump wall. I can't think of one person on the left that supports it, while most on the right are up for it. How do we bring the two together? We could use the Army Corps of Engineers. Our tax dollars already pay for that. Problem? They qualify for Veteran's benefits, which, in the long run, may be too costly. Still, there is a way. Bring back the CCC. I know, it would take some doing because the Republicans fought it all the way to the supreme court and had it declared unconstitutional, so we'd have to get the elected officials to get SCOTUS to reverse that. Or find a way that IS constitutional so that there wouldn't be a problem. Main thing, though, is to have the Army Corps of Engineers run the program as they did in the 30s. Put the young folks that can't find work in those positions as laborers and let them learn as they go. Better than a tech school. Use basically, the same methods used by the CCC for training. No passes to town on the weekends to blow their money. Money to go back home to their parents/wives, small stipend that they can spend at a PX (if your familiar with those prices, you'll realize that a young person can stretch 40 bucks a lot further than they can stretch 100 bucks. Serve a term of 4 years, and they go into the real world with job skills from carpentry to masonry, to pushing heavy machinery. In peace time, they can have their pick of jobs in private enterprise, may start their own businesses if they have the knack, or even, because of the military training in discipline given them, like the CCC did, many can even join the military and advance quickly there. Imagine if the fighting in the Middle East and Afghanistan were to escalate. They've already talked about the draft, including drafting young women for combat. Say that's brought back. Look at what happened in WWII. From basically a standstill, we suddenly had a major fighting force that went into action in a limited time. Why? many of those recruits were vets of the CCC. They rose in rank almost from the get go because they had the military training needed even though they never shouldered a gun in combat. Many platoon leaders, from acting corporal to master Sergeant during those early years came up from the CCC, because they had the training needed to succeed.
Personally, I'd like to see the government just fine the shit out of the traitorous businesses that hire illegals, but that ain't gonna happen.
