Yeah, I have no problems with harvesting of timber - we need wood after all - but I grew up seeing the ugly after effects of clear cuts. You don't see those nowadays, most harvesting is done more selectively. It used to be that the timber companies and the logger unions were always at each others' throats, and they were always on strike. But when the naughty ol' spotted owls started going in the dumpster the companies used the fight against the enviromentalists to bring the unions to heel, but then proceeded to get their asses kicked anyway. There's still a lumber industry, but it's on a much smaller scale.
