True, most Americans that are fans of communism only have an idealist's understanding of a communist society. Utopian schemes promise heaven on earth, the solutions to all of man's problems, and inevitably end up becoming the worst societies where men and women languish in chains, fear and indoctrination. Communism isn't a good idea, it only sounds appealing because of its empty promises. It's an impossible system because people are people, they can not be treated like cattle, nor will they live like ants forever. Good meme!

I meant that all americans thinks about communism like you do, what you talk about i Autocracy, not communism, Autocracy is a form of government, communism is an ideology, and it is not what you say it is, even though most countries that claim they are communist is like you say

I gotcha and I agree that communism is an ideology, it is a utopian ideology that is completely pervasive on all levels to include government. I actually disagree with you that most americans misunderstand communist ideology for autocratic regimes undergirded by communist ideology. In the USA we have a huge portion of our population who think that communism is a wonderful idea that will make our society better and "more revolutionary". There is a Communist Party USA, Marxist & Leninist groups in major cities. In the universities there have been pro-communist professors teaching overt communist dialectic for at least 40+ years now and people like Che Guevarra are considered heroes of rebelling against "the system". Communism leads to autocracy. Americans are not all one kind of people, we don't all think just one way.
This is a very large country, it's like a nation of 50 different nations. Each state has it's own constitution, legislature, judiciary, and executive branches exactly like we have in Washington DC. I really appreciate the point you make, kallekanin, it is a very good one! Autocracy is a great evil for men to suffer under, no man or woman should have to bear that willingly.

I have to add to my previous reply, there seems to be a pretty sharp divide on feelings in regards to communism and socialism in the USA that come from the long Cold War. The two terms are associated with each other and most people tend to react strongly for or against communism and less so against socialism (as we have slowly become more and more socialized in many ways and our European allies are very socialist). A large portion of our population is very independently minded and rejects both notions completely, you find most of these folks between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountain ranges, the people who tend to be more in favor of them are urban or coastal. I remember the the old days well, my old man was in Afghanistan in the 1980's and Yemen as well. We still practiced "duck and cover" in school in case of a nuclear attack. It was bad times for everyone in many countries.

I'd like to point out that Communism does not lead to autocracy(I'm not a communist my self) since communism is about abolishing the state, and let the workers own the means of production, this however is not the case in any of the "communist" countries, furthermore communism, or Marxism in this case regard the dictatorship of the proletariat or a dictatorship of the majority I.E a democracy as a vital part in achieving communism, almost all of the self styled communist countries in the world lack these key elements that define communism, but I can definately see why some people would think that communism leads to Autocracy since it is the case with most "wannabe" communist states
