The last president to miss the press dinner was Ronald Reagan, and only then, because he was recovering from being shot. Still, he did make a phone appearance.
The only other presidents to skip this function were Carter and Nixon. We see how their political careers went.
The press Corps dinner is a major function and a major factor in winning over public support for the chief executive. When GW was president, I watched him on the dias. After all the barbs, the slings and arrows used on him, including those from his wife, who came close to the biggest laugh by referring to him as being "Mr. Excitement" GW gave back just as good as he got.
It's a pity that the man that holds the most powerful position in the world would be afraid of acfew jibesxat his expense, even though he has the chance to rebut them at the end.
For the last 8 years, I've seen a demotivational go around about GW saying, "Do you miss me yet". I'm beginning to miss him, and I'm not talking target practice.
