I guess Dan "Fake News" Rather didn't listen to Trump's speech today. I wonder if Dan was as concerned about the the untested junior senator from Illinois when he took office 8 years ago.

@Treehorn316 Mr. Rather is a seasoned journalist and the furthest from "fake news". I would venture to guess that all of Rather's career retractions combined would be dwarfed by all the retractions FOX News has made throughout its entire history on-air. People were concerned about Obama eight years ago including President Trump who expressed his concern and doubt with the least amount of class and tact that we continued to see during his campaign. My concern after listening to his speech today is that crass demeanor President Trump has established will carry over into the Whitehouse and the most respected seat in our country. I'll continue to not let my cynicism get the best of me, but myself and millions of other Americans have our reservations. Let's see what he can do.

Dan used faked memos to try and keep G.W. Bush from getting reelected in 2004. I think they called it "memogate" at the time. He is/was a biased reporter that got caught faking the news to push his ideological agenda. Some believe it directly led to his ousting at CBS. If that's not "fake news", I don't know what is.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh, yes. Memogate. NPR, and other unbiased news outlets, concluded that "...it's still not certain that the documents at the center of the controversy were fake. And other news organizations have published reports that largely support the greater premise that President Bush cannot account for much of his time in the National Guard."
But, the bigger bias in my eyes is Sumner Redstone wanted Bush re-elected & saw to it that the network he owned would not jeopardize President Bush's chance with this story. Bias aside, I still agree with Rather that President Trump works for the American people now and if he forgets that it will be our duty to remind him.

The memos have never been authenticated. Several typewriter and typography experts concluded they were fake. The original documents have never been located. They are fake. There is no such thing as unbiased media. Dan's buddies at other news outlets trying to cover for him doesn't make it any less fake. Maybe Summer Redstone just didn't want Dan tainting his brand with that level of journalistic malfeasance. CBS stood by the story for two weeks. Dan lost his lawsuit against them too. I'm aware of the events surrounding "memo gate". It was fake news. Again, Dan must not have listened to Trump's speech today. It was pretty evident that Trump knows who he's working for.

Touché, and thank you for the refresher Treehorn. I still feel there are some journalists out there who are unbiased because you're supposed to tell a story based on facts. And, I agree with you that the facts (or lack thereof) are fuzzy on Memogate.
But, since you're an advocate for biases and facts I have to ask, what is your stance on President Trump's impeccable reputation for sharing his support for stories that have no fact, aka fake news?
Case in point:
-Obama being a Kenyan Muslim
-Obama not being an American Citizen
-Ted Cruz's father being involved in a plot to kill President Kennedy
- (1989)The Central Park 5 being guilty and deserved the death penalty (do yourself a favor and watch http://www.pbs.org/kenburns/centralparkfive/)
-(2013) Despite all evidence exonerating The Central Park 5, Trump states their still guilty and calls the settlement on the case "the heist of the century"
- Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia was murdered
- Retweeting a "statistic" that 81% of white people are killed by black people
- Millions of people voted illegally on November 8
- Climate change is a trick the Chinese are playing on the world (my favorite)
- Vaccines cause autism
- Marco Rubio can't be President because he's not a citizen (despite being born in Miami, FL)

I can go on President Trump's Twitter and go on, and on, and on, and on.... Again, I listened to the speech, which in my opinion lacked the optimism his voters and non-voters needed. If I had to guess who/what Trump is working for at this point it would be his ego. Cheers to the next four years.

All politicians lie. "If you like your health insurance plan you can keep it". "I never sent classified emails from my server". Show me a politician that doesn't lie and I'll show you one that's never won an election. The media on the other hand have a duty to objectively report things. Unfortunately they are now just an extension of the political establishment. It's important to note that the vacating of charges and convictions along with the civil settlement were done for political reasons by democrat potliticans in NY State. The convictions were upheld on appeal. Matias Reyes had nothing to lose as he already had a life sentence and the statute of limitations had expired. Though it is likely that he had participated in the attack. Bloomberg was fighting the lawsuit but de Blasio settled as soon as he could.

Without a doubt some media is an extension of political establishment. But, when the new leader of the free world does his part over, and over, and over again to successfully spread erroneous material and hate speech to the masses it's very telling of Trump's moral character. And to me, that's a far more bigger problem than media bias. Clearly Trump has an affinity for fake news since he's done beyond his fair share of spreading it as fact. You can't deny that our President has done this.

Bloomberg refusing to settle for decades because him and his lawyers felt the five would win is also political. Racial climate aside in NYC during the late 80's, police officers who take an oath to serve and protect should not have coerced five teenage boys into confessing to a heinous crime they did not commit. To me, that's the bigger problem than any political influence for settlement on either side.

Yeah, I hate when presidents lie and report fake news too. Hate speech, lol. I love when that Orwellian phrase is used to describe things people say that we don't agree with.

July 22, 2016 - an hour after Obama said that there was a terrorist attack in Germany. You can't make this stuff up...

Yeah, or give a victory speech on an aircraft carrier with a huge banner that says "Mission Accomplished" even though majority of the casualties in Iraq, both civilian and military, occurred after that victory speech.
0 ups, 8y
Seriously? Do you even research this stuff or just default to liberal talking points? Neither Bush or his staff put the banner there. A banner stating "Mission Accomplished" was used as a backdrop to the speech yet it was requested by the crew and referred specifically to the aircraft carrier's 10-month deployment and not the war itself. If you actually listen to the speech Bush said,"Our mission continues" and "We have difficult work to do in Iraq," he also stated that it was the end to major combat operations in Iraq. The Iraq army was defeated and the rest of the war was fought against gorilla fighters, mostly from outside Iraq. This another great example of "Fake New".

That was my interpretation of it. You seem to have whole lot of different ways that you interpret facts. Speaking of facts, tell me, we're those weapons of mass destruction ever found?

They didn't settle because they believed the State would win, lol. There are accusations that the confessions were coerced. They are just that, accusations, not facts.

Define fact? Because I'm confused. A clear confession from Reyes and his DNA evidence confirmed in Meili's rape are merely accusation? Not fact? Are you saying that the Central Park 5 should still be in jail? I'm sure that Reyes' confession and DNA is the reason why DA Morgenthau vacated their charges in 2002. Trump stated in 2014, "..."Speak to the detectives on the case and try listening to the facts. These young men do not exactly have the pasts of angels." Which is confusing to me, because whatever the past of these "inner city/urban" kids is irrelevant to the case. Trump is no angel himself with his past of sexual assault allegations including rape, racial housing discrimination, defrauding millions of students with Trump University and paying a $25 million settlement, four official bankruptcy filings and so on.

I'd like to continue on, but I need to get back to my weekend. Thank you for the mostly constructive dialogue/debate. Alas, we'll just have to agree to disagree. Again, I agree with Rather in that Trump works for the American people not, not his ego, so if he forgets that we will remind him. Now, let's see what he can do. Best to you Treehorn.

The fact that is in dispute is the coercion of the confessions. The involvement of Reyes is not. Though it was never established by a court since it was too late to charge him. This was a gang rape after all so multiple people participated including Reyes. Due to the length of their sentences the Central Park 5 would be free today anyway. I wish that Obama had acted in our best interest and not his own ego. Well, his ego and the will of the international globalist. But without Obama I doubt we would have gotten Trump.

Good thing Trump didn't drain the swamp. Let's see what this group lacking diversity can do since the majority have one thing in common besides their money & views and that's being unqualified.
