The war ended, but not all of the Jews were released and found until after the bombs were dropped. It took a few years after the war was over.

You won't find that info in text books though. I got it from my grandfather who was a spy during world war 2 and was tasked with cleaning up certain "messes" as he called them, i was a kid and he didn't want to scare me with details.
