Because it's a meritocracy! The best players make the most money. The worst players get cut.
It's too bad that they don't realize that's what life is all about, whether you're a ball player or a burger flipper or an office worker or a doctor or a lawyer. Supply and demand. You get somewhere what you're worth and what the market can pay.
