One further note on detention... There was a JW convert in my Unit who, once a JW, went to the Squadron Commander and told him he was against the Vietnam Conflict and wanted out of the Service... now in that first meeting he refused to salute the Squadron Commander... the Commander requested he salute,,, the airmen would not salute...so off to the Brig for 6 weeks he went... as soon as he was released he was told to report to the Squadron Commander... when he went in he refused to salute... so off to the Brig for another 6 weeks... as soon as he was released he was told to report to the Squadron Commander... he wouldn't salute... off to the Brig for another 6 weeks... after the third time he was discharged. I respected, and still do, both men for the stance they took. That JW didn't just walk off the Base and desert his Post. He went to his Commander... he stood up for his beliefs and took what was necessary to prove them... that's what Bergdahl should have done!
