I think it is actually fairly difficult to emigrate to Canada, and even more so to Mexico. Maybe they can call themselves political refugees. :p

I live in Canada. I worked with a lady who married a man from India. It took him over 3 years to be able to immigrate here. I assumed it was a free pass after you got married to a Canadian. It might be easier for Americans though.
