And I respect you for saying that. Liberalism isn't leftist economics. Liberal economics are as I said above. If that sounds like what Republicans and conservatives claim for themselves today that's because they jumped on the bandwagon after the original, 'classical' liberal economists (think Adam Smith) formulated the concepts. 'Liberal' became a dirty word for 'pinko' because that's what GOP campaign strategists have been trying to get people to equate it with for the last 40 years. Liberalism doesn't mean socialism - in fact the original anti-communists were liberals - it means the autonomy for the individual in social, political, and economic lives. Conservatives came to the ideas after Barry Goldwater managed to convince them they were newly formed out of their backsides. Those calling themselves liberals who want a program for everything and the government to pay for it are actually conservative by nature. Conservatism is at heart about conformity and control; many leftist activists want to control other people in the hopes of making them 'see the light', just as 'real' conservatives wish to control other people in order to get them to accept their value systems and allow them to rule.
