Saxons would have won the battle but some of their allies broke ranks to chase retreating Normans, so the Normans figured if they kept retreating they could get more to break ranks from behind their massed shields and they did. Then the Norman archers figured out that shooting straight up the hill into the Saxon sheilds was pointless and they started firing upwards to hit the troops behind. And thus we have some French words in the English language.
