The Fifth Amendment allows the deprivation of property following due process of law, so it is in fact the case that some people can be stripped of their ability to legally own a weapon.
There are many abuses, but one example of it being done correctly is the loss of rights that a convicted felon experiences - his trial is the due process for the removal of voting and arms rights as well as the removal of his liberty.
