Once upon a time people weren't overly paranoid and it was common for males (many of which who enjoyed outdoorsy stuff) to carry pocketknifes with them. In fact I (a female) used to keep one in my purse. (I had to stop when it was confiscated by security at work). There are many non violent uses for pocketknifes, such as peeling fruit, cutting cheese, ect. There are even more uses if it's a swiss/multi-tool style pocketknife.
