Heh heh heh. Okay, here's the story I researched for my July 4, 1998 column. Or at least as I remember it.
During the French Indian war, colonists were not looked upon fondly by their British Comrades in Arms. The term Yankee Doodle was used to refer to these Plowboys. It had various meanings, and in polite society, it was similar to us saying someone is a hay seed or country bumpkin. The actual term, as you guessed it, referred to these colonist spending all their time yanking their doodle, or wanking as it's now refferred to across the pond. By the time 1776 came around, the colonists decided to show the British just what a lot of is wankers could do.
While it wasn't easy, we beat back the British with a little help from our friends.
Looking at it another way, you could say the colonial wankers had help, and circle jerked the British to defeat.
