A Policeman is a composite of what all men are, mingling of a saint and sinner, dust and deity.

Gulled statistics wave the fan over the stinkers, underscore instances of dishonesty and brutality because they are "news". What they really mean is that they are exceptional, unusual, not commonplace.

Buried under the frost is the fact: Less than one-half of one percent of policemen misfit the uniform. That's a better average than you'd find among clergy!

What is a policeman made of? He, of all men, is once the most needed and the most unwanted. He's a strangely nameless creature who is "sir" to his face and "fuzz" to his back

He must be such a diplomat that he can settle differences between individuals so that each will think he won.

But...If the policeman is neat, he's conceited; if he's careless, he's a bum. If he's pleasant, he's flirting;if not, he's a grouch.

He must make an instant decision which would require months for a lawyer to make.

But...If he hurries, he's careless; if he's deliberate, he's lazy. He must be first to an accident and infallible with his diagnosis. He must be able to start breathing, stop bleeding, tie splints and, above all, be sure the victim goes home without a limp. Or expect to be sued.

The police officer must know every gun, draw on the run, and hit where it doesn't hurt.He must be able to whip two men twice his size and half his age without damaging his uniform and without being "brutal". If you hit him, he's a coward. If he hits you, he's a bully.

A policeman must know everything-and not tell. He must know where all the sin is and not partake.

A policeman must, from a single strand of hair, be able to describe the crime, the weapon and the criminal- and tell you where the criminal is hiding.

But...If he catches the criminal, he's lucky; if he doesn't, he's a dunce. If he gets promoted, he has political pull; if he doesn't, he's a dullard. The policeman must chase a bum lead to a dead-end, stake out ten nights to tag one witness who saw it happen-but refused to remember.

The policeman must be a minister, a social worker, a diplomat, a tough guy and a gentleman.

And, of course, he'd have to be genius....For he will have to feed a family on a policeman's salary.

Paul had a great way of putting things. I miss his voice. As I've said about cops before, they go into places you wouldn't go without the protection of a tank, see things that would keep us awake at night for months and deal with people we would walk across the street and a block out of our way to avoid. All while being micromanaged by people who have no knowledge of the job on a day to day bases, people with cameras trying to incite them and a shown disdain by the people who the risk their lives to protect.
It's not a job I could do.

This one's going live tomorrow https://i.imgflip.com/173sg1.jpg

My brother-in-law is a SWAT officer and everything you say is true. I couldn't do it either.

I started to make a very similar one this morning, but decided to go simple and not go all political today since I was seething mad.

My son-in-law has applied to be a Dallas police officer. I'm not feeling that peaceful myself.

Must be an awesome person to want to do this with all that is going on. I wish the best for him.

We've spent the last 8 years telling everyone evidence doesn't matter, bringing bogus charges and letting the lies perpetuate. Did out president ever say "hands up don't shoot" never happened? NO!!! This is directly on him.

Good on you to keep it simple. I'm too upset and decided to sit it out today. I agree with you and am beyond disappointed that he divides rather than brings people together.

I think the only one happy with him are Putin and Iran. Even the extremists have gone on record in their magazine to make sure when attacking you attack only white hetero American males because the Obama admin. will mis-label it otherwise.

People who bash on the police are f**king morons. There's a soecial place in hell for the people who sit behind their f**king computer screens bashing the same people who are at that very instant risking their lives and the well-being of their ENTIRE F**KING FAMILY so idiotic turds can fap and sit on twitter in mommies basement and talk about "The need for reform". Ever thought about what would happen if the police went on strike?! Oh I forgot. They don't think. They "feel".. And the thing is, IM the one who feels this way- meanwhile thousands of cops ignore all that and STILL go out and risk their lives and reputation knowing full well that they could end up in the headlines just for doing their job.

I agree, I couldn't do the job. I know I would crack heads day 1. The first child/wife abuse case I went on I would have to pistol-whip someone. My response to Bob and his long comment sums it up for me. I have LOADS of respect for those who do the job professionally and still manage to hold it together.

My mom works for the state with Abused children and such. For one, you have NO idea how incompetent the people running all that are. They act like these cases are beef orders for mcdonalds...

But anyways, my mom has told me several times she felt like seriously injuring those people. I really hate child abusers; and I KNOW there is a special place in hell for them because I read it in the Bible every time I hear about another sicko on the news. If I were a cop, I would probably kill someone eventually. And that's why I respect cops- because they hold back in so many situations that most of us woukd go crazy in. Bob's post was definitely a good description of what cops go through.

I'm fortunate enough to have never lived in a country with violent crime the vast majority of my life, but I know that the police go to work with a gun on their waist, hoping they'll never use it but knowing they might have to. (In my home country the police have literally never had to draw a firearm. Woo hoo, decent civilian and law enforcement interaction.)

So how do you think that is, it's a serious question as to why you feel there is no violent crime to speak of. Also why or why not that what works there would or would not work here. I feel like I'm asking a student to do an essay, but I am very curious. :)

Well, my home country has the population of a small town in any average sized country (less than 60.000), but as far as violent crime goes, fist fights happen, usually in high schools or bars. There's been literally 2 murders in the past 50 years.

I think it comes down to population density coupled with "small town mentality"

However, if you listen to whatever bullshit Paul Watson and PETA spout then the Faroe Islands are the most vicious and evil and violent people in the world who are hunting whales to temporarily satisfy their insatiable bloodlust.

Wow, 60,000! That really is small. The list of suspects for anything would be really small :)
