ping is essentially how long it takes for data to travel from your computer to the destination, measured in milliseconds and represents either how far a person is from the server, how bad their connection is, or how much porn is being downloaded in the background ;) . to play on a european server from aus with my mediocre IP, i'm looking at about 350 odd ping. so the guy with a ping of 40 literally wouldn't notice any kind of lag between him performing an action and it happening. the guy with 290 ping may notice the slightest difference between doing things and them actually being done. the guy with over 17,000 is waiting 17 seconds to have the game react to any input he makes
