The first few amendments were specifically designed to protect us from government. The founding fathers still had Britain fresh in their minds.

The first amendment protected free speech, religion, and press because in England they were very oppressive when it came to all three.

The second amendment was designed around the idea of citizen militias instead of standing armies, which the founders believed that a government would be used to oppress it's own people. Hmmmmm...

The third amendment protected against garrisoning soldiers in private homes during peacetime because, guess what? The British did this all the time.

The fourth amendment protected against warrantless searches because the crown's men could search your home or property at will without one.

The fifth amendment is designed so that you do not have to testify against yourself because...well you get the idea.
