I love this meme...things like NASA give us something to look forward to, to work together and more importantly dream together about.

I think mining asteroids will be a reality soon. It's thought that an asteroid a kilometer in size contains upwards of a trillion dollars in various metals. Elon Musk is putting investors together.

Its just not same when a company does it, it doesn't feel like a national effort. Its cool and all, don't get me wrong but NASA gave us a national pride. That pride is VERY much missing today. There is a lack of ANYTHING that the vast majority feels united around which I feel leads us to being so far apart on so many issues.

Remember the argument against spending money for projects like Apollo? It was "Fix things at home before going to the moon." And now we spend so much more of our national treasure on welfare and similar entitlements in order to "fix things at home" and I think it has been a mistake. Don't get me wrong, safety nets are important, but we've bred an entire segment of society with an entitlement point of view about everything! Ask not what you can do for your country became demand what your country can do for you somewhere in the 1970s.

The more "safety nets" that are created, the less care people take NOT to fall into them. It goes far beyond even programs such as Nasa, but the money is not there to keep up with infrastructure.
