It is listed on Wikipedia as a derogatory term for people from the NYC area that visit the New Jersey Shore. Though, as it was explained to me by an old timer in Pennsylvania many years ago it means "beneficiaries" or people that get "benefits" - meaning people on welfare. He made several racist comments when I had to work cleaning one of his properties. At some point he realized that I couldn't believe how redneck racist he sounded and he stopped and said, "oh, right, you think I'm an old racist redneck. I'm not. I hate everyone the same. This mess was from the bennies that lived here. They were white, we call them bennies because they're on welfare and section 8 and are just as bad as anyone else. They can be white and we still hate em just the same."
