Albeit one that was digitally enhanced. The nebula was shot several times using different filters, then the photos were layered one on top of another to get all the colors on the same picture..

Even so, the fact that this even EXISTS, and that it exists in the same universe with us; it just leaves me in awe.

No doubt about it. I'm an astronomy hobbyist and I know what you're saying, and agree whole-heartedly. And the mind REALLY gets blown when you come to realize just how many more of these nebulae there are in just our own galaxy!
Then, multiply THAT number by the 100 to 200 BILLION galaxies in the known universe...

I don't get it... Is it supposed to make some sort of rorschach image that everyone but me sees?

Uh, no. It's a pic of a nebula in space. And a real one, too! We're just talking about how amazing it is.
