TBH I think it does have to do with popularity. It seems like the top users make it to the front page sometimes with frankly not that funny stuff, just because they are already popular. And no, not all humor is subjective. There is a technical definition of humor and some stuff wont fit that definition. What I just said was not at all funny, it was not humorous, no matter how many people like it.
