You've been fed and believe lies. Compared to other European countries, its social expenditure-to-GDP level does not even make in the top ten list. France, Finland, and Belgium spend the highest social expenditure-to-GDP levels, according to the OECD, while even Germany, which has been the foremost advocate of austerity, had a higher social expenditure-to-GDP level than Greece in 2014, as well as in 2009. Furthermore, many of these high social expenditure countries, such as Denmark, Norway, and Sweden, have significantly lower debt-to-GDP rates than the United States.

First of all, homogeneous populations with single political bodies. I.e no States with conflicting interests with a body count close to Alabama isn't a good comparison to begin with. You need to go larger...lime China to get even close to reasonable comparison. Just go start off.
Next, you are correct about the expenditure however you miss the fact that Greece didn't have the revenue generation to sustain it. Couple that with s failure to make chsngrs

Changes to its tax system, corrupt economies have a hard time with that, and compound it with the bailout money going strictly to debt not job creation... Well, it got pretty recessive. This wasn't helped by the fact that retirement age was low, public pensions were high, revenue low, and having lied about its stability in the first place. Oh, then let us not forget it being the first country to default on an IMF loan.
Here's some numbers for you. 33.5% of the GDP is tax burden whilst 50% was given to government spending. Unsustainable at best

And who mentioned Noreway, et al, in the meme to begin with? Btw, here's how Sweden did it. https://sweden.se/business/how-sweden-created-a-model-economy/

None of that refutes my statements. You just expanded on the corruption, which I agree. Years of corruption and lies crashed the economy, and then the string of failed bailouts.

I wasn't necessarily refuting, but showing the half statement. The system of government was in place with the corruption and, I think Fed by the system of government. The problem is that your refuting of the original post leads one to belejve that their was no grerk financial crises because of their spending to GDP. However, Greece slso lied about their numbers to begin with causing a destabilization. Personally, if we were a more politically aligned country, I lime the current. Swedish model.
Sorry for rambling...slightly hung over on 4 hours sleep.

I think we are ultimately agreeing with each other. The meme is desperately trying to blanket all the blame on socialism though, so I was focusing on social expenditure compared to other European countries and then back to the US.

Well, like any system, there will be humans involved. Greece has three extreme groups in charge and none of them want to give up on control through social programs. Sweden had to liberalize and move to more market based system. The US is choking the market through over regulation ( not just pollution control) without allowing natural forces to dictate growth or diminish. So...no perfect solution.
