I actually haven't been finding a lot of iron lately so I'm actually glad they added copper gear

Really? I usually just find a big cave and there’s tons of veins of iron, you also get a ton from mountains

well I don't find a lot of iron on servers

and plus, would you rather copper be completely useless other then decor blocks and lightning rods or would you rather have copper gear to craft

I do think it needed armor and tools, but there should be some reason to use it. Leather boots let you walk on powdered snow, gold gear lets you avoid piglins, and all the other gear besides chainmail fits into the progression. I just think they should add some unique trait, like make the armour oxidize over time which could increase its durability and maybe even defense
