Millions of years ago trees would die and fall on the ground but the little bacteria which would make them rot hadn’t existed yet. So the trees would literally just lay there like a cut down forest not decomposing.

The trees would then be buried by soil and glaciers and water and compressed yes and eventually since they couldn’t be broken down they being made of carbon and living material would be compressed into coal.

This did take millions of years just because we can’t replicate it and how it’s buried deep below place
