"Exploding trees" in sub-zero temperatures is a real, loud phenomenon known as a frost crack or "ice cracking," where rapid, extreme cold causes the sap inside a tree to freeze, expand, and rupture the bark. It produces a sound similar to a gunshot or thunder as the tree splits vertically to release internal pressure.
