Because galaxies move so slowly compared to their sizes, them merging as sometimes shown in the top part of the GIF would take millions of years to occur at present rates. The only way that galaxies could have merged is if processes in space used to be a lot faster for the light to reach the earth. If a different solution to the distant starlight problem is correct, then no galaxies have merged.
