Considering people actively get murdered in the West by Muslims because they drew Mohamed, and that they attack anyone that says even the tiniest criticism on them or their believes, I do believe it's a religion of violence. Not all of them are violent, but enough of them are to create an accurate stereotype.
2. The difference between Islam and its older siblings is that with them, it's no longer enforced in the regions where they're the majority. In regions where Islam rules, well, people that left the religion have a good claim for asylum in other countries.
