The original video, featuring a prairie dog turning its head, was taken from the Japanese television show "Hello! Morning". When dramatic music was added to a 5-second clip in June 2007, it became a viral meme, although the prairie dog was misnomered as a chipmunk. By January 2008, it had over a million views. In November 2008, songwriter Perry Gripp (hot off his hit videos "Boogie Boogie Hedgehog" and "Shopping Penguin") featured the clip in his 30-second music video "Dramatic Chipmunk Hey", along with clips of other animals doing similar moves. His video received over 4 million views on YouTube alone.
