Bowser notices Mario and Luigi, attacks them, and they get attacked. Heatfreeze Island gets unlinked, and Twistee Island(that's what happened in my save) too. You wash up on Offandon Island, and find out there is a bounty on Mario and Luigi.

err, at the part before "Heatfreeze Island...", I meant, "...and they get thrown overboard by the attack."

Erm, most battles of WW2 were ground combats. For example, D-day was a result of the Germans being sandwiches between western and eastern allies. Even the battles that weren’t fought on land were naval battles, such as the American attacks following Pearl Harbor.
