Actually, 500 chunks is 5 miles (8.04672 kilometers) in the real world according to Mojang's math, so 5000 blocks is actually 50 miles (80.4672 kilometers). Your estimate is off by a LOT (note that I suck at math).

Actually 100 chunks is 1600 meters but a mile is 9.344 meters more so still pretty inaccurate
