First Lieutenant, U.S. Army
Mark Toschik was born in Phoenix in 1950. He was raised there as he graduated from West High School in 1968. Throughout his childhood and during his years at West High School, Toschik was an excellent shooter and hunter as he won numerous awards for his skills. A month after graduating high school, Mark Toschik enlisted in the Army. Toschik had a goal of getting into Special Forces, and he met all the requirements of Special Forces, except the minimum age of 21. Toschik was recommended for OCS and graduated from there with an officers' commission in 1969. He was also recommended for entry into the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, but turned it down to "serve with his men." Toschik would become a Ranger and platoon leader with E Company of the 75th Infantry in the 9th Infantry Division. On August 11, 1970, during a night insertion, 1LT Toschik spotted the enemy after inserting his platoon. A quick exchange between the enemy and the helicopter took place in which 1LT Toschik was wounded. The helicopter attempted to take off again and would crash as a result of that exchange. 1LT Toschik would rescue both pilots before collapsing. 1LT Toschik would die from his wounds not long after collapsing. 1LT Toschik was awarded the Silver Star, Three Bronze Star Medals, four Air Medals and a Purple Heart.
