When I watched this, a TCM host explained that this was one of the first movies to explore the darker side of drinking; many movies, like The Thin Man series, had a lighter take on drinking where people could drink without it messing up their lives. Ray Milland does an outstanding job in his role, and it's no wonder he won an Oscar for it; I recommend this for anyone who enjoys Ray Milland and happy endings -- while the drama is good, I thought it would end on a down note, but it has an uplifting ending that makes it all the better.
