Yes, we have an AFFORDABLE housing shortage. We are absolutely not keeping pace with building new housing... but specifically affordable/subsidized housing. Unregulated temporary rentals (VRBO/AirBnB) have also decreased the inventory dramatically, exasperating the problem.

The houseless and unstable housing crisis is also a product of the privatization of our health care industry and the deconstruction of our mental health care systems (thanks Ronald!), the stagnation of minimum wage (thanks republicans), the climate crisis (thanks corporations and anti-science dwerps!) and the exportation of manufacturing (we all need to eat this one... but thanks Biden and the unions for working to bring it home again.)

I'm old enough to remember my grandparents telling me that men used to be able to get a good job after high school that would be enough to afford getting married, support a mortgage, buy a car, have 4 kids, and have some leftover for entertainment and vacations, all before turning 23 if not sooner.

My parents purchased their home for under 100k. Their neighbors just sold their small home (without renovation) for 3 million. In ONE GENERATION... that's just not sustainable. Too many working poor. We need strong unions, minimum wage increase, manufacturing brought home, actual regulation on the corporation and for the rich (and the corps) to actually pay their damn taxes.

and how's that all going to happen? Can't rely on politicians to do anything. They're literally owned by corporations and banks. Those corporations and banks are only going to make the situation worse in the coming decades, not better. But but but they don't want you to be sick and they want to go green because they care so much about the well-being of you and I.
