objects have "gender" due to the fact that gender was made for language, esp describing things
it is used less frequently in English, but in languages like Latin and Spanish, gender plays a big role in the way they speak, a group of kids with mixed sexes are the masculine word "ninos" but if it was only girls it would be the feminine "ninas"

no, they are pretty different
the reason people say gender is normally because gender is flexible and you can basically make up new ones whenever. pronouns are a part of gender, but sex is not. Boats? no sex, but their gender is feminine, so you refer to a boat as 'she'
