That is actually what happened to me.
One time I was in this cave and it was very deep, I came down looking for diamonds. When I got to a lava pit, I bridged across it, and there was a zombie spawner right next to me, so I tried to fend off the zombies, but they overwhelmed me and so I tried to build up and escape the zombies, but they crowded me. So I couldn't build up, and they killed me with about 8 diamonds.
