Have you ever wondered what condemnation would be like? Unfortunately the verse I had in mind is NSFW, but I can give you an idea of it.
The Jews were given a number of specific commandments to be obeyed, and if they were to break it, they would be cursed for it. Not cursed as in hexing, but cursed as in relation to condemnation deserving punishment.
Now all of us are familiar with the 10 Commandments and we have all broken them so what are we? We are the law breakers of each and every one of those commandments. It is not just that title we're given.
Have you ever lied before? What are you now? Have you ever stolen anything though small? What are you then? So on judgment day it might look something like this:
Cursed are you who have had other gods!
Cursed are you who have made idols on earth!
Cursed are you who have taken His name in vain
....you who've broken the sabbath!
... for you have dishonored your parents!
... you are a murderer (Matthew 5:21-22)!
... a thief!
... an adulterer (Matthew 5:28-29)!
... a coveter!
And so on, as there are actually is more. The 10, or the Decalogue is just 10 of 613 commandments, and the Bible says that if you have broken one, you have violated all (James 2:10).
But for our salvation, Jesus bore our sins and became as sin in turn (2 Corinthians 5:21). He took our place of condemnation on the cross, drinking in full the wrath of God in which in His wrath He turned His face away, causing Jesus to exclaim "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me (Matthew 27:46)?!" so that we can be saved.
He is indeed, the propitiation for our sins. Recall, the great dilemma. Now God can legally declare us as righteous before Him,
'Hallellujah, what a Savior!'
