I've been on the internet since 1995. My first website was a humor site called The Church of SPAM. Prodigy, while not providing financial sponsorship, did give me quite a boost in viewership when they mentioned the site in one of their print ads.I ended up being interviewed for a book (Spam: A Biography) as well as radio stations around the world (Well, Guam isn't just next door. Most were done by US and Canadian stations)

I had no idea. 1995 was a difficult year for me. With a World Wide Web if unlimited porn and a 14K modem, the glitter was slow and not golden.

One reason my site was more text than graphics. It's funny that, with all of the lawsuits Hormel was passing out at the time, they let me go unscathed. I pushed the envelope, but they never said a word.One interviewer advised me that they were aware of it, but they would only say that they'd seen it and it was kinda funny.

Nah, they were around nearly 100 years ago, but really didn't take hold until the advent of the internet. Most memes, back then, were UPI/AP picks of celebs with appropriate captions. When I DID start memeing, it was my response to all of the pron spam on Usenet.
