I once did a video project in college with a yulelog of this sort.
I Shot the video - just put a camera on a tripod, in front of a fire...hit record and walk away... And then used a luminance key, in video toater, to turn the fire itself into video snow - or colar bars.... I still have it buried away somewhere. I even have a 3/4 inch video tape deck to play it (Newline Cinema was getting rid of it - hope it still works...)....
