One of the greatest moments in history- Military Week

Iconic moment for sure, but it's not the actually flag raising...The real flag raising had already taken place. But a zealous General wanted to take credit and get a photo op with his marines. It's also sad, they took the men who raised the second flag and paraded them around the nation afterwards, even having them stage flag readings at sporting events etc to raise war bonds and it really messed some of them up. One committed suicide if I remember correctly. There's a film made about them.

I didn't know that. But this is etched in our memories. There is a lot of misrepresentations of many events throughout history. The victors write the history. Thanks for enlightening me.

both flags are on display at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Quantico Virginia. The display them one at a time in a huge case. It is impressive as is the museum. I highly recommend it if you are in DC

I bought my dad and two brothers in law bricks. It is an impressive museum with easy parking a snack bar and restaurant. Sorry if I sound like an ad.

Great gif. My friend was in the first Gulf War. They were a day outside of Baghdad waiting for orders to go in. I remember General Schwarzkopf saying they moved by the cover of night. My friend said that's B.S., they moved none stop to Bagdad. Poor guy said he never slept when he was over there.

lmao yea man they say we only move at night but like your friend in the gulf war, I was in the initial invasion into Iraq and we moved non stop as well all the way to bagdad and we had to clear and take over the Baghdad international airport, and we had news reporters with us the whole time which was ok cause we all got some pictures from it anyway

That is cool man. At the time they always said the first Gulf War was the most televised. I think yours topped that. I hope none of those reporters gave away your position, like one reporter did drawing in sand on tv.

lmao know ours were pretty cool man they wanted to be right there in the middle though and we had to tell them a couple times we can not protect you if you dont stay behind us but they had no fear.
